1) If the electronic filter change indicator breaks or runs out of batteries, is the whole system useless?
2) What are the pros and cons of Brita pitchers?
3) If the filter should be change, and I keep using it, what would happen (would the water come out slower, impurities in the water, etc.)?

I have a Brita pitcher, so I can help you with questions 2 and 3. The pros are that I don't have to keep running out to buy bottled water, and I feel more confident about the water I'm drinking. The cons are that the water takes a few minutes to filter, so if I forgot to fill up the pitcher the night before, then it feels like an eternity to filter in the mornining when I want to make coffee. Ok, really, it's only a few minutes, but that's a con when you're used to instant gratification.

According to the Brita website, the filters "fill up" with junk over time and that's why you have to replace them periodically. But they say if you do not replace it, then it will just stop filtering so the worst thing will be "tap water in, tap water out". But it won't add any impurities that weren't already there.

I'm looking into buying one for my cat since she seams to prefer my ice cold Brita purified glass of water to the tap water in her dish (not that I blame her). If you have one, which brand is it and how do your cats like it? Please list any Pros / Cons.

My dog has a fresh flow fountain by Petmate.

You can also see when the water needs to be refilled and keep an eye on it. Its easy to clean...

I really don't have any complaints about this product so far. Its safe to use... works pretty well, holds just the right amount of water for my dog... and its easier than running back and forth to the kitchen with his water dish when he runs low, which is just about every hour on the hour.

only bad thing is mine was a bit pricey. $30.

Hi, can anyone tell me the pro's and con's of using the following:

I used to have the regular pitchers, but now I have a rectangular one that looks like a flat water cooler and sits in the fridge. It has a spout you can open and close at the end. It's made by Brita. It holds more and is more convenient to use.

Never used the filters for the faucet, because I don't need to filter all the water I use; just the water I will drink or (rarely) boil some food in.

It is a great coffee maker. It brews coffee fast and easy to operate. You can use tap water or you may wish to buy bottled water if you are concerned about filtration. Very simple to use. However you need to buy the Bunn Filters direct from them. Other coffee filters are not made as tall and often can hold all the grounds in due to the high heat and pressure this maker puts out. But the Bunn Paper Filters will cure this challenge,

I hate the tap water where I live, so I was wondering if anyone could give me the pros and cons of water filters and bottled water *based on their experience*, because I'm not really finding the answers I want by Googling.

I figured using a water filter such as Brita or Pur is slightly cheaper than buying bottled water, but I am wondering which has less health concerns. I've heard that bacteria building up inside the filter can defeat the purpose of actually using one; and as for bottled water, there are health concerns of using plastic bottles.

Which is better in the long run, do you think? BTW I live in an apartment and probably will for a long time so having a well or some expensive filtration system installed is not an option.

If you live alone and don't cook a lot, there isn't a lot of difference. Bottled water is more convenient but then you have to keep on buying it, instead of just turning on the tap with a filter. If you're not living alone and you cook regularly, water filter is definitely more economical and convenient. If you're worried about the bacteria building up in the filter, what about the plumbing in your apartment which does not get changed or cleaned at all. A filter cartridge usually last about 50(?) gallons of water so you have to change it every few weeks or few months anyways. One advice, when you run filtered water, try to fill up a few containers at the same time so you don't have to turn it on as often, and the filter can last much longer.
