I bought a 1.75 liter bottle of cheap 13 dollar vodka and I filtered it 5 times. Is it just me or did it really work?

1) Is tap water (cold) from (possibly Calgary, Alberta) clean?
2) Is tap water (hot) from (possibly Calgary, Alberta) clean?
3) Does Brita filters really work - can you notice the differences?
4) How long does a typical filter usually last under normal conditions and usage?
5) Is the Brita filter really worth it?
6) Does Brita or tap water taste better?
7) Does it actually filter - can you see any impurities in the filter?

Which one is better, tap filters or jug filters?

I'm not sure about the tap water in your area, but I think Brita filters are a decent investment. You can really tell the difference to regular tap water. I did a taste test with my mum and dad, and we could all tell the difference.

The filter is a cartridge, so you can't see any impurities, but they recommend 3-4 months usage before replacing it. The downside could be that the filters are not cheap. 7-8 dollars. Another downside to the brita pitchers is that it doesn't filter that fast, so if you want water quickly and it's not filled, you need to fill it up, then wait till it filters, which could be about 5 minutes. Another downside is that the pitchers don't hold that much water. There's a limit to how much they can hold.

Is it worth it? if you dont' mind the downsides and make it a habit to keep it filled so that it fulfills your water intake. Best bet would be to find someone who has one, and do a taste test and ask them how they like it. good luck

I used to replace my filter every 2 months as suggested on the box. Currently, I'm using the same filter since middle of March '07, so I'm running about 5 months now. Now that I've noticed it, the box actually says "2 months OR 40 gallons" for best results. 2 months is definately long due, but i've been keeping a tally, and I've consumed about 85% of the 40 gallons (I get ALOT of water where I work since there's a water cooler/filter there, and unlike the box which assumes a family of 4 as typical use, I'm single).

Assuming the stated capacity of the filter hasn't been reached yet, should the 2 months be aboslute, or would you say there's some leeway there? If the latter, how often do you think it's best to replace the filter to keep possible bacteria and gunk that may build up due to long times of filter use out, while not wasting any extra $$ throwing away filters that could've had "a few more miles"?

Usually manufacturers will set a date or litres used for changing over filters (whichever comes first). I would think there is some leeway with timing, but it's always best to check with the manufacturer as a precaution.

Regarding bacteria, Brita say that the use of silver and the activated carbon used in their cartridges prevents growth of bacteria, and as long as the water in the jug stays in contact with the cartridge, it remains hygienically safe (see http://www.brita.com.au/help/frequently_ asked_questions ).

I have used the Brita filters before and found they are OK for getting rid of chlorine and improving taste in water. However, I've recently started using the Waterman, which is a bit more expensive up front, but the filters last for up to 6 months. It filters to 0.1 micron and also re-mineralises the water, which is an effective way to increase the amount of essential nutrients in your diet. Its just that the lcd indicator on the lid lasts 4 weeks. in a household of 1 person, perhaps a liter a day would be used, ie 30 liters a month/replacement filter. In a household of 5 people perhaps 5 liters a day would be processed, ie 150 liters a month/replacement.
ZClearly if the filter is just as adequate to filter 30 liters a month as it is 150 liters a month then either the single person is being badly ripped off or the family of five risk drinking crappy water.

They are good for about 40 gallons according to the Brita website

So i just bought my first water filter and it was the brita one, This is not the advance one with the other features like sprinkle, but anyways i installed it, and did that 5 minute conditioning like the booklet said. Although i didn't time it, but the green light is not on. and also when i use the filter for a glass of water there is like little bubbles on top. Is that normal or?
