I can get a gallon of spring water from the supermarket for 90pence. Is it worth getting a water filter?
I used my filter for about two months before replacing it. It really depends on the amount of calcification in your water. If the magnesium is very visible on the surface of hot tea, you'll be using it about a month.
The other thing is the reduction of plastic waste from bottles.
In Northern England the water is very low in calcified deposits, so the water doesn't really need filtering, just allow the light chlorine aroma to disappear. In the places like the South East, the water is horribly calcified.

I just got a Brita Maxtra water filter. The first time I used it the water was blue, the second time a lighter blue. The third time the water looked normal and clear. I don't understand why the water the first time was blue - I followed the instructions to the letter but there was no mention of the filtered water being blue. Have I got a dodgy water filter or is this normal and others have experienced the same thing?
There should be no reason for the water to turn blue. Contact the manufacturer. They should be very interested in your experience.
i've got a brita water filter i think buying bottled water is more expensive and it causes more pollution than a brita maxtra cartridge which u get a month a time from in your brita filter jug!!!
I love my Brita. But I think it's more that the water is super cold from the fridge that makes it taste better.
Does anybody who uses the Brita Maxtra jug filters notice tiny black particles in the filtered water? I think they are coming from inside the filter, and there seems to be a lot also accumulated between the filter and the jug. I change my filter every 6 weeks and clean out the jug regularly.
Does anyone know what they are and why this is happening? Is it supposed to happen? Are they harmful at all do you think?
Thanks! :)
That's normal. I've been drinking Brita water for over 10 years and it's the charcoal from the filter. It doesn't harm you in any way. Most of the time it just stays in the area on top and doesn't float into the water. Just clean your pitcher every time you use it and you'll be fine.
