I got a new Brita. I followed all the guidelines of soaking a new filter and rinsing it and letting it filter water a few times before actually using it. But there is black specs floating in my filtered water that I know is coming from the filter. Is this normal? And what is it?

I have a brita jug with the water filter. I've had it for 5 months, but only really used it a month. I noticed there are white spots on the bottom of the filter part, is that normal or is that bacteria growing or something? I'm just wondering since its supposed to last much longer and I've only used it a month really.
The filters are suppose to be changed every 2 months even if you are not using it that much.
I actually work for United Utilities, the Water Board in the North West. To be honest, for the price your gonna pay for a Brita filter, the actual difference you'll taste in your water, is minimal, if not non existant. Basically, your water is treated on at least two occassions - once upon first being gathered from the resevoir / borehole that feeds you, and secondly, once it enters your local treatment works by the water board - all impurities are removed, the colouration is checked, the acidity is checked, the hardness is checked and also minimal levels of Chloring are added to kill any Germs (I stress Minimal - dont go thinking swimming pools on me!). The pipes feeding you water are either Cast Iron / Alkathene - which due to the high water pressure are amazingly clean. In most cases Brita / other filters predominantly only act as a 'Placebo' whereby just because you have a filter - it appears to taste better.
Honestly... it'll do sweet FA for the Taste / Purity / Hardness / cleanliness of your water - save your money
