What Are The Black Things In My Brita

Answers

What are the black things in the top of my brita water filter?

There are little black specs in the top of my water filter where you pour the water into. What are they?

It is some of the carbon granules that have floated out of the top of the filter from when you filled it with water.

No biggy - it is normal and harmless.

Can water actually grow mold?

I feel really silly asking this, but can it? I went to get some water out of my Brita pitcher, which was in my fridge, and found little, white "sea anemone" type things on the bottom of the pitcher. When I wiped out the bottom, the white things turned out to be black. So I was just curious what it was.

Truly pure water would not support fungi growth. However, your Brita filter does not come anywhere close to producing pure water, particularly from the stand point of a hardy fungus. There are a variety of fungi that can grow in the presence of very low salts and very low organic matter. All fungi must have some organic matter to digest as an energy source and some inorganic salts. We typically call these fungi mildews. The fungal spores that gave rise to the colonies likely came from variety of sources. The container that you thought was clean, the Brita filter can't remove all the spores from the water and you will introduce spores from the air every time you open the container.

Living Through It: Writing as Therapy

My house looks like a slob of a writer lives here.  There are two cans of soup sitting on the drier, and I walk past them many times in a day and think I should put them away.  But I don't.  There are two small stacks of mail with which I need to deal.  There are glasses and coffee cups and spoons and a box that brought my records I ordered from Amazon and my Brita pitcher and that’s all.  The dishwasher is half empty, glaring at me to finish the job so I can clear away some of the shit on the counters. In my room, I can hardly see the top of my dresser.  I’ve been knitting like a fiend, working on ruffled scarves for my Savannah girls.  They look like a pile of brightly colored snakes.  The rest of the dresser is covered with New Yorkers I’m trying to finish reading so the pile doesn’t grow any taller.  There are photos,...

Random Bits of Sara: Child#39;s Fire Part 1

Small office, walled with tan wallpaper and white trim. Comfortable. A large window overlooks the busy street, three stories down. In front of the window is a large oak desk, clean, well organized. A computer monitor flashes pictures of people: kids, babies, parties, a kiss. A leather-backed, swivel chair is pushed neatly against one side, facing two open black chairs on the other side. Bookshelves fill the wall space to the right, and on the left is a large mirror, positioned perfectly in front of the bed-like chair, brown with a headrest. A small, round table sits next to the bed with a cup of dead flowers and a blank notepad and pen. Three other chairs occupy the room. One is a few feet from the bed and two others are positioned just behind it.
