carbon filter for tap water

Answers

I recently bought a kenwood jug water filter. Question can anyone tell me if the carbon filters?

used in these jugs could pose a health threat over the long term? The water from own my tap requires filtering and bottled water contains far too many minerals - hence the water jug filter.

Used one for about three years when we lived in an area with bad tasting water and it really helped. You need to replace the filters regularly but it was a good alternative to the expense of buying bottled water and you didn't have all those plastic bottles to dispose of.

Filtered water has higher TDS than tap water?

My water comes from a well in my yard and has a typical TDS value of 100-140 range.
I have installed a 2 stage micro biological filter that has a 5 micron particle and carbon filters.
After the installation I am getting a higher TDS reading from my filtered water (180-190) which is appox. 40 points higher than the untreated well water from tap.
There is no measuring error since I use the same TDS meter for measuring both sources.
Filter instructions states that I should run 7 gallons of water through the filter before it performs proper filtration.
While the initial numbers I read of 600-500 came down to 180-190 it is still higher than unfiltered water.
Does this make sense? How long does a basic water filter takes before it reaches to full performance?

I think your meter must be bad. My well reads the same before and after my filter, but my filter is just for filtering out the sand.

Is it safe to drink the black stuff (carbon?) in the water from the brita pitcher?

every time i pour it out and pour tap water through the filter i always find little specks of black things. is it safe to drink or should i return it?

it's perfectly safe. Sometimes they give the same activated charcoal to patients in hospitals to help with some ailments. Not to worry. Little tiny specs of it won't make a difference.

home made water filters & brita?

ok Im maken a home made water filter for tap water..i bought Activated carbon for aquariums, but when i compared it to brita water filter carbon, it seems the brita has much smaller granulated carbon, plus something added in, like tiny white pebbles, i don't know what that is.. i am thinking to use two kinds of carbon, one to get rid of bigger material in water (microscopic size) and one kind to be able to absorb even smaller micron size material... I figure AC (activated carbon) for fish tanks be good to filter larger stuff, but where can i find the kind of AC to absorb real smaller material?

Your method will not work to do the same tasks as one of the original Brita filters.

Besides being of smaller particle size (with a greater surface area), the active carbon in a Brita filter has been silverized. This is not an easy job to do at home. In addition, it contains an Ion Exchange Resin (the tiny white pebbles).

Have to worry about the safety of the water itself. So much so that the kids take super-quick baths and they buy and truck in water that they store in big barrels on the porch. Today? In America?

This family's very unsafe drinking water is chronicled by the New York Times in the second article ( and compelling video ) in its important series on the increasing pollution in American waters . As Mrs. Hall-Massey says so well:

Mrs. Hall-Massey's question is easily answered: the Clean Water Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act are being violated significantly and routinely, and the violators are simply not being punished.

According to the NYT's investigation, state officials fined or otherwise punished fewer than 3 percent of Clean Water Act violations. And when there are more than 506,000 Clean Water Act violations by more than 23,000 companies and other facilities, 97% unpunished violations means something.

How to Find the Best Water Filters: Best Purfication Methods to ...

Most people are concerned about the purity of the water they are drinking. Contaminated water is a major source of health problems.

What Contaminants are Found in Tap Water?

The most common contaminant is chlorine. This chemical is added to cleanse water of microbes but the chlorine itself poses a health risk. Chlorine is said to cause bladder cancer and cancer of the rectum.

Heavy metals can also be found in water, usually from old lead pipes. Metals such as lead and asbestos are present in water in many places all over the world. Pesticides, insecticides, bacteria and other chemicals have also been found in water, affecting overall health. It is imperative that people think about removing these contaminants from their water supply.

Bottled water is not a good option for the environment, in addition to being more expensive than tap water, the bottles are manufactured from plastics which damage the environment and contribute to landfill problems.
