water's color is carbon-ish after water is filtered?

Does anyone know why the the supposed filtered water comes out from my undersink water purified system is visibly carbon color.

I recently changed the filters. The color does fade away if I flush a little more, but it has been behaving like this when the first time of a day in the morning I turn on the faucet, for a couple of days already.

Just leave the water running for a while to flush out the carbon powder that's getting into the water. I have a reverse osmosis system that has a carbon filter as the final stage. The instructions said that, when the system is first used, let the 5-gallon tank fill up and then drain it. It says to do that twice before using the water from the system to flush out all carbon deposits from the filter.

Give it time. It will stop putting out carbon eventually.

Can the activated carbon used by home brewers (to distill alcohol) be used as a water filter?

I spend $35 to replace the carbon filter on my water filter/pitcher every few months. Would the activated carbon used by home distillers be as good an option to filter my water? The exact brand I'm thinking about is Prestige stone activated carbon (.4-1.4mm), and I would be running it through a coffee filter in the existing housing on my water pitcher.

Can any chemists - amateur or professional - tell me if this would be a good or bad idea?

Not sure but if you want more information on filters look up the website for a company callled CUNO.

Can bulk activated carbon be used in water filters?

I own a Katadyn Combi water filter. Carbon refill packets for it are expensive. There are many places to buy activated carbon in bulk relatively cheap. Physically it's a trivial matter to buy in bulk and use it in the filter but I'm wondering about the quality of the carbon, the form of the carbon and how suited it is for the filter or anything else I need to be aware of when buying carbon in bulk.

I think you might be in for more trouble than its worth. Activated carbon will come in a powder form, most likely. So then you'd have to open the filters, dump out the old stuff, and hope your system has enough pressure to push through that much carbon.

I would look into some heavy research on the fabrication of carbon filters before I tried to do something like that.

Its sort of like saying "gas is expensive, i think i'll just buy oil on the open market, and refine it at home to make the gasoline."

Why are the carbon particles in my Brita filter getting into the filtered water?

I know the particles aren't harmless, but they're not supposed to get into the jug where I pour my water from.

What's causing this? Sign that I need a new filter maybe? It's been happening since I put it in 2 months ago though.

Anything I can do?

The instructions suggest that you run two full pitchers for a new filter to get the loose particles out.

That said, perhaps you didn't insert it tightly enough into the jug in the first place. Try pushing it a little tighter and try again.

It's okay if the particles are in the top part, as long as they don't leak through.

What are some cost for different kinds of carbon water filters?

Dont tell me to search it. Obviusoly i already tried. Please answer if you own one.

17 Ways To Green Your Holidays : Ecopreneurist

Walking the green walk, isn’t always easy, and the holidays present special challenges. Its not always easy to mess with traditions. Last Thanksgiving I hosted a 100-mile Thanksgiving (I chronicled it in two blog posts on the OrganicMania blog). My attempt to convince my mother-in-law in Tampa that buying condensed milk at my local supermarket for her traditional key lime pie wasn’t really in the spirit of the plan, did not go over so well. That said, I can see a 100-mile Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza or even a 100-mile gift rule.

Tip #1: Source locally. Use local and sustainable produce, flowers, beverages, décor and rentals for holiday parties and meals.

Beyond that, there are two primary categories of activities involved in greening holiday parties and events: Finding ways to minimize the impact of the consumption occurring at the event itself, including food, flowers, beverages, décor, gifts, ect… Finding ways to mitigate the carbon footprint resulting from the airplane travel, car travel and lodging consumed for the event.
