You may be helping a lot of people to save money and keep healthy by answering and share your experience using Brita filters.
I found that Brita Filter replacement cartridges and similar products are extremely expensive. Not mention if you have to pay for the water+sewage as well in your monthly utility bill.
1. Is it good for pregnant woman to drink water filtered by brita instead of buying bottled/distilled water?
2. Is brita filter cartridge contains only activated carbon, what are the white/cream particles inside?
3. Is it easy to regenerate just by boiling it, or you have to reactivate the carbon by baking or burning it?
4. Can you replace the carbon with regular activated carbon (with the same particle size)?
It depends on what you are wanting to filter out of the tap water. Do you know if your tap water contains an elevated level of lead or other heavy metal or chemicals other than the chlorine added in water treatment? If not, I suspect that most filters are very effective far beyond their recommended capacity, since that is based on the worst possible level of contamination in any water system. If you want to test this, use the filter for a while beyond the recommended replacement date, and test the water for chlorine with a swimming pool test kit. If you don't have a pool or know someone with one, call local pool maintenance companies & see what they would charge to test it for you. I am quite certain that there is no way to regenerate activated charcoal/carbon.

The truth is that TAP WATER is just fine in most communities. State laws regulate frequent samplings, inspections and reports on the content of our drinking water.
Lugging in jugs of bottled water to drink in your house is simply not necessary.

Yes, i have a undergravel filter, which is powered by an air pump. (I only have a 10-15 gallon air pump, in a 29 gallon tank. But i don't that makes a difference, becasue it should just blow out the same amount of air through the 2 tubes) But when i put the carbon cartridges on, it slows down the flow of the filtering water (Bubbles come out every 2-3 seconds, i thought it would come out all the time and have a pretty good current). Then i read that if there isn't a good current going through the cartridges the carbon cartridges will actully be toxins for the fish. So what should i do to help. Is the undergravel filter still cleaning the tank without the cartridges, or should i get a bigger air pump which will help the current of the water through the cartridges? Please help....
Yes i also have a filter going on also, and it have rosy and tiger barbs with rasaboras....
Do I really need the carbon cartridges on the filter tubes...
An UGF requires a large air pump to get the water moving. It works by the air going up the tube drawing water with it creating a suction through the gravel to draw the mulm down into it. So yes you do need a bigger air pump for it to work properly.
Carbon is pretty much useless on the top of UGF's. They can actually be toxic unless you change it every 2 weeks or more often. Charcoal has actually been proven to not be effective in any filter except if you need to remove meds or tannins. Save your money and don't bother with it.

I just need to know how often to change the filter cartridge. I know not to remove the carbon part of the filter. I have a filter that uses two cartridges at a time and therefore has two streams of water coming out from it. I have heard that you need to change it every month but I was just looking for a definite answer. will pick best answer.
sorry I don't think I mean carbon, I am talking about the sponge looking thing that is made of black stringy material.
I just got my name from a Devin the Dude song. its classic.
In my 60 gallon I have 2 60 gallon filters. You're supposed to change he cartridege once every 3-4 weeks, like the water change. However, beneficial bacteria can build up on/in them. You say you have two filter cartridges? What I do is change the left side, wait two weeks, change the right side, wait two weeks, change the left side and so on. This way I'm not removing all the good bacteria that can build up all at once.
You do need to change the carbon though. Unless you reactivate it, (I'm not 100 percent on the actual procedure to do this, but I believe a salt bath is involved), the carbon will "fill up". It does have a max capacity, and needs to be changed to keep optimum water health. I'd change one, wait, and change the other and so on.
Best of Luck!
EDIT:
Ahhh, then yes you are right. The sponge filter should be left in. If it's looking really dirty, rinse in the tanks water, never tap water. This can damage the beneficial bacteria that lives in it.
Hey guys.
I just bought one of those AquaClear activated carbon filter media from a local pet store, since I couldn't find the regular carbon cartridges my filter uses.
I followed the boxes instructions by rinsing it throughly in water, but these black particles keep coming out from inside the bag, and there seems to be no end to it. I've already rinsed the media out for over 10 minutes, but the activated carbon still turns the water all dark and murky; it's beastly stuff.
But can I still put this into my power filter? Or does there seem to be something wrong with the activated carbon I just bought?
sounds to me that the carbon in the bag,has been pulverized.the particals are so small they find the way out of the bag.ten minutes.is way too long to be rinsing this carbon.the dust generated from the shipping/handling should have been rinsed away in a minute or so.take it back to the pet store.by the way, its a good idea to rinse carbon in purified water,as the tap water contaminates saturate the carbon reducing its life and ability to soak up pollutants.it should be sealed away from the air as well.

The Industrial Filters Variety
There are a variety industrial element and applications used in the industrial arena. Its not as simple as one element, as the industrial sector offers and requires detailed filtration systems that business professionals should be cognizant of and recognize to correctly pick their ideal filter.
Absorption Filters. Absorption filters are designed to take out water or a specific chemical from fuel, solvents and oils. Generally used in gas pipe-lines, refineries, oil recycling applications.
Adsorption Filters. The Fullers Earth is used to absorb soulable contaminants such as gums, resins, waxes and acids from fuels, oils, and solvents. Carbon elements are created for the restriction of color and smell from potable liquids such as water, vegetable oils and mineral oils.
Air Intake Elements. Developed to take out atmospheric dust or particulates from air intake applications...

Hi I've had a ten gallon fishtank for about a month and a half now. Everything is going great I just have a question about filter cartridges. I remember reading something about washing the current filter cartridge in some of the old tank water, but when and how often do I do this? Also when am I supposed to replace the cartridge altogether? I wouldn't ever replace the entire cartridge unless you were restarting the tank or the tank had been wiped out by a contagious parasite or disease. Replacing means you throw away all that tasty good bacteria that keeps the water parameters stable, by putting in a new cartridge the tank will go back into the nitrogen cycle while all that bacteria starts to grow all over again. There's likely to be an ammonia spike which will damage and kill any livestock you have.
