Can the activated carbon used by home brewers (to distill alcohol) be used as a water filter?

I spend $35 to replace the carbon filter on my water filter/pitcher every few months. Would the activated carbon used by home distillers be as good an option to filter my water? The exact brand I'm thinking about is Prestige stone activated carbon (.4-1.4mm), and I would be running it through a coffee filter in the existing housing on my water pitcher.

Can any chemists - amateur or professional - tell me if this would be a good or bad idea?

Not sure but if you want more information on filters look up the website for a company callled CUNO.

i'm tired of buying bottles water, heard about water filter system the other day, went to water places to?

check it out. the under the sink called the reverse osmosis filters cost $499 include install and tax comes with the carbon filter which you have to unscrew and put in new filter every six months. and the other one costs $599 with install and tax. with this one , you throw away the whole filter unlike the carbon filter one. which one is better. also there the whole house filter which comes with water softener and the under the sink filter for $2000 with tax and install. any suggestions or opinions are appreciated. thanks.

why not just get a water filter that attaches to your faucet>? they are like 25=30 bucks at walmart or target. the one I bought today was $30 and it will filter 300 gallons of water before I have to replace it.

Does any one know of a good soultion for hydrogen sulfide removal from a house's water supply?

We have a very bad problem with the municipal water supply where I live I am currently useing a 2 filter whole house water filteration system that utilises carbon filters and have to change out the filters on avere evey 2-3 weeks I some know of a better solution to the problem that is ecocomicly feasable I wopuld sure appericate it The whole area has this proble (small vilage Pop. 300) The village has done nothing to improve our water quality with the execption of adding an iron filter about 2 years ago

you must first oxidize the hydrogen sulfide. chlorine is the best method using chlorox and a chem-feed pump. this makes the gas into solid particles of sulfer oxides that can then be filtered out with a back-washing carbon filter. if dosed properly you should get 6-12 months on your carbon. under certain curcumstances you can remove this poison, flamable and corrosive gas with KDF.

Which Whole House Filter System is best for lowering solids? ....?

This is a large residential location with about 10 people. I am searching for a filtration system for the whole house. tap water comes out at 320ppm, and they would like one filter to use fr everything, pool, showers, dishwasher, lawn... Are there any systems that drop the ppm through a filter without having a waste line? All i am hearing about is carbon filtration or water softening. They dont want water sofeteners.

There is a whole spectrum of water treatment systems around for treating water for a variety of contaminates. Solids, if your are not talking about dissolved solids, are a simple filter, but this is rarely any real problem. If you are talking dissolved solids, TSD, you probably need something more sophisticated. I would send a sample of the water to a lab that does the testing, Google "water testing lab" and see what their results or if it part of a municipal water system get their test results and their recommendations for treatment. Could be activated carbon, simple filter, reverse osmosis, distillation (although not for the volume you are talking) and possibly others or combinations of them. Google "home water treatment" to see what is available. Consumer Reports puts out a good stream of info on this, try your local library to gain access without subscribing.

Do I install a water softener before or after my water filters?

I'm installing a water softener on the side of my house, out there I already have 4 small filters and one large carbon filter. Do I install the softener before or after these filters?

install watersoftener and remove filter they wont do alot of good thats part of the softeners job

When Do You Need A Home Water Treatment Unit? | Life.Means.Health

If you receive your water from a public water supply, it should be safe to drink. The United States Environmental Protection Agency sets standards for public water supplies that limit the levels of contaminants. The water is tested regularly to ensure that these standards are met. You may find out the results of tests on a public water supply by contacting your water utility or the Minnesota Department of Health.

If you’re still concerned about the tap water you drink, home water treatment units can be a good solution. But water filters aren’t always necessary. Before you buy a home water unit learn as much as possible about the tap water in your home. You should check with your local water supplier and ask for the annual water quality report. Note that some contaminant levels remain constant throughout the year, while others vary according to season, weather, or from house to house.

Water purification pitchers are an affordable and commonly used home water treatment device. Most water pitchers use granular- activated carbon(1) and resins to bond with and trap contaminants. These filters are effective at improving the taste of water, and many will also reduce lead and other contaminants.
