I have a baby girl 4 months old. Her doctor told me there is no need to give my baby extra liquid's (water or tea) until she is 6 months while i'm breastfeeding, and my baby is doing just fine, she's 7.200 gr. But other people keep telling me like i need to give her the extra's, dont always listen to doctors blah blah blah. So please somebody tell me, when is appropriate to give my baby water and food?
Breastfed babies dont really need water well thats what ive been told by health vistors but i have always gave my boy water and he loves it!! he's 6 month now and drinks 3-4 oz of water a day at the end of the day dont listen to doctors or other peoples advice just you do what you think is best for your daughter there is no right or wrongs!! oh and i started weaning my boy well i wouldnt say weaning but he started having bits of purees at 3 month! some people will call me for doing so but it never harmed us did it!!!

I have a six month old, and I was just wonderding when can my baby start drinking water? I have 2 1/2 year old, but to tell the truth, I don't remember.
It depends on what your baby is eating. Are you breastfeeding? or Formula? Babies don't really need water at that age. They get enough from breastmilk and formula. If you think that your baby is really thirsty after eating and drinking then you could give four ozs a day nothing more than that. good luck

I have a 3 week old baby girl and wnat to know when she can start drinking water. thankyou ;)
all a newborn needs is provided in breast milk or formula - you really don't need to be giving water until about 7-9 months, and by that time you can use sippy cups.
I was told by my doctor not to give my baby water to help get rid of hiccups. It's just that I put a question out there about taking my son to the beach and someone said to give him water. He'll only be 3 months old and that doesn't seem right for me to give him water. I just want to know what's the best way to keep him hydrated when it's really hot out? Does formula work?
6 months for formula fed and 9 months for breastfed.
Breastmilk and formula have all the water that baby needs to stay hydrated. They don't need extra water.
In fact, extra water can be harmful, especially to such a small baby. Water takes up space in baby's tummy and makes him not hungry for milk--which is essentially starving the baby.
At the worst, too much water quickly changes the electrolytes in a small baby and can cause brain damage or even death.
6-9 months.
From the link below:
Please use extreme caution when offering infants water. Infants who drink too much water may come down with Water Intoxication
For children under 1 year old - and especially during the first nine months of life - drinking too much water can be dangerous.
In fact, according to pediatricians like James P. Keating, MD, medical director of the St. Louis Children's Hospital Diagnostic Center, "too much water dilutes a baby's normal sodium levels and can lead to seizures, coma, brain damage and death.
Breast milk or formula provides all the fluid healthy babies need. If a mother feels her baby needs to take additional water, it should be limited to two to three ounces at a time and should be offered only after the baby has satisfied his hunger with breast feeding or formula"

Is It Safe for Babies to Drink Water? - Consults Blog - NYTimes.com
Dr. Alan Greene responds:
Even though water may be the safest and healthiest everyday beverage for older children and adults, water can be dangerous for young babies.
During the months before starting solid foods, the amount of water already present in breast milk or formula usually provides all of the water that healthy babies need both to grow and to replace the water they normally lose through their urine, stool, skin and lungs.
Water intoxication
Too much water can cause water intoxication in babies. Each time a baby pees, he or she loses not only water but sodium and other electrolytes. But unlike with adults, who tend to get too much sodium in our diets, babies usually get just the electrolytes they need from breast milk or formula. Too much water and they lose too much sodium. The sodium levels in their blood can plummet and cause irritability, brain swelling, unresponsiveness and seizures. (Note: Water intoxication also involves other factors, but that’s more detail than I can go into here.)
...Significance Of Water For Infants - Feeding Water To Infants ...
Your pediatrician would also advise you the same that your baby should not be given plain water until the age of six months. Newborn babies fulfill their water requirements by drinking milk, which is mostly water and that is why it is not a matter of concern.
Of course, after the period of six months, you need to feed your baby with water as well. Now how much water your baby requires is a question you would need the answer. Generally, during the first few weeks you start to give water to your baby, you would tend to skip this more often.
Your baby might also keep on crying in expectation of plain water but you may not be able to understand it and assume some other reasons for it. It is highly advisable that you keep a close watch on your baby’s requirements for water. The easiest way is to think about your baby whenever you drink water yourself.
Furthermore, by this time, you would start giving solid foods to your baby and you would prefer that your baby takes more of foods other than milk. This thought is fair enough and your baby actually requires cereals, pulses, beans, vegetables and fruits, in order to keep pace with her growing age.
