I have hard water with lots of iron in it. We have a water softener to combat this. If we didn't have the softener, our water would be orange coming out of our faucets. It's not that good to be drinking water with the softener salt in it, especially now that I'm pregnant. What would be the best water filter for me? Should I get one that attaches to the faucet or a pitcher with a filter?

get a brita filter and drink tap water. Toledo Ohio has the best tap water in the United States.

I want to buy a filter of some sort to filter the tap water for drinking purposes. It's an old nyc apartment with a shared kitchen, so I don't want to be installing anything especially since I'll be moving out next year. What's the best way to filter the water?

Get the Brita system. It's just a pitcher with an insert...you change the filter periodically, it tells you when.

I would like to know what is the best solution for drinking water in India. 80% of people are consuming Direct tap/Borewell water without any filtration and it some times causes health issues.
This question is specific to a family of 8 people .all of them are indians!!

are you just visiting or living there for a while, it makes a big difference. How many people? For one or 2 people, you can get a small water filtration device about the size of 2 of your fists, and for 3 or 4 people they have one the size of a persons arm. The smaller one around $900 to $1200, and the other is $1800 to $2200. These are not your normal water filtration systems you find in the hardware store. They are used in marine applications were if you get stranded at sea, you can filter sea water into pure drinking water. They are so powerful that you can pee in a cup and filter it into pure dirinking water.
Now if you are going to live there for a while, they have much larger systems that cost alot more, you have to ask yourself, how much is your health worth?, if you know what I mean.

i know theres diffrent waters for different needs but its so confusing. oh and where can i get it. right now i'm just buying cheap spring bottled water. perhaps someone know any filter or something. and is Distilled water really bad on long term drinking. Is alkaline water the best? someone please help me........thank you

I agree on general "confusion" statement.

There's no such thing as "best water". Every water has its impurities. Distilled water is not "bad", but I wouldn't drink it in the long run. Alkaline is typically a marketing gimmick, your body's natural pH is just over 7, but it naturally absorbs anything between 6 and 8. Below or above - not really that good. "Alkalizing machines" also do not make any claims on water contaminants (hint - there's a reason for everything).

Consider this - cheap spring bottled water is nothing but processed tap water. Not much difference. Can be done easily at home with home water filter.

After that it all depends how pure you want water to be, and how much money you spend on bottled water. A cheap $100 system or a quality water pitcher oftentimes is capable of producing great tasting water.

If you want a great tasting water at home, call your water company and ask for a general water test, and list of other contaminants in your municipal water supply. They will provide you with a good report, may even be free. Based on that, ask any water specialist what he thinks you should put as a water filtration system in your house.
