I have hard water with lots of iron in it. We have a water softener to combat this. If we didn't have the softener, our water would be orange coming out of our faucets. It's not that good to be drinking water with the softener salt in it, especially now that I'm pregnant. What would be the best water filter for me? Should I get one that attaches to the faucet or a pitcher with a filter?
pur water filter takes out the iron in my water very well it should work for your needs.
The Big Berkey Water Purification System comes with two Black Berkey Filters. It has a storage capacity of 2.25 gallons and can filter up to 3.5 ...
I only need a small water filter, counter top. I don't know why I can't make one, but it has been difficult to find information, instruction or ingredients.
I would think that carbon would be one ingredient. I want the water to taste better, and remove the bad minerals, and organisms. I don't want to remove the good minerals.
I live in a high rise that is about 60 years old, and it uses city water. The city is on the shore of Lake Michigan.
I really don't want to put a lot of money into buying a counter top water filter system, since I'm on Social Security, and have to cut costs as many ways as possible.
Some things I've learned in my searches, is that the carbon can become contaminated over time, and should be changed periodicly. I also learned that batting below the carbon can remove small pieces of the carbon. But, are there other ingredients I need, and how do I build it?
If your water is coming from lake michigan, then your water has allready been filtered by carbon or anthracite. The municipal city water filters are built like this: bottom layer is gravel, then the next layer is "green" sand. These both act as mechanical filters. The top layer is Carbon or anthracite. There is a bunch of other filtering and separation that takes place before it gets to the carbon. Anyway, the carbon beds act as a type of "polishing" filter before it is chemically treated and distributed to the users.
If your water tastes bad or has odor... your idea of a carbon filter may work but due to the age of your building... you may be experiencing some pipe issues. Either way, a home filter will help a little bit. Your best bet is to call your municipal water department and make a complaint. They can sample your water and also test for lead and other impurities.
Carbon filters do become spent through use and must be changed out periodically.
Having said all that... at the current cost of carbon and the other materials needed to make your homemade filter... go buy a Brita filter. You'll save a ton of money.
My 2 cents and 2 points.

I just moved into an apartment and the water is awful. When it first comes from the faucet, it tastes fine but smells like metal or rust, but then after leaving it out for a while, it tastes metallic. Would getting a faucet or water pitcher filter give me safe drinking water? Should I start buying bottled water instead of a filter?
This is in Richardson, TX
It's probably old pipes that is giving your water that metallic taste - not the water itself. So yes, I would buy bottled water.

why is that. it looks like a white dust in the water. If you let it set for a few minutes it will almost completely dissolve. I'd like to know what that is, and if its bad to drink.
the water filter is supposed to be really sophisticated, and be of better quality than arrowhead bottled water.
If the filter is new, it's probably washing off some of the filter media that is hanging which will eventually disappear after several use.
However, if the filter has been used long enough that it needs replacement, your water may be recontaminated by the chemicals it's suppose to remove. It's called "breakthrough."
If the filter pore is too clogged, filtered water may not be able to pass through but instead wash off those contaminants into your supposedly filtered water.
So, it's better to change your filter as recommended.
I want to buy a filter of some sort to filter the tap water for drinking purposes. It's an old nyc apartment with a shared kitchen, so I don't want to be installing anything especially since I'll be moving out next year. What's the best way to filter the water?
Get the Brita system. It's just a pitcher with an insert...you change the filter periodically, it tells you when.
They're sold at Target. Good luck!

Hormone-Disrupting Herbicide Widespread in U.S. Drinking Water ...
CHICAGO, Illinois , August 25, 2009 (ENS) – The common herbicide atrazine, known to impact wildlife reproductive health, has contaminated watersheds and drinking water throughout much of the United States, finds a new report released Monday by the Natural Resources Defense Council that raises concern about the chemical’s effects on human reproduction.
The environmental nonprofit organization alleges that the U.S. EPA is ignoring its own data showing broad contamination of U.S. waters by atrazine, a known endocrine disruptor that affects human and animal hormones.
“The extent of contamination we found in the data was breathtaking and alarming,” said Andrew Wetzler, director of NRDC’s Wildlife Conservation Program and deputy director of NRDC’s Midwest Program, as well as one of the report’s authors. “The EPA found atrazine almost everywhere they looked.”
The contamination data in the report was obtained as the result of a legal settlement and Freedom of Information Act requests, the NRDC said.
...Drinking Water Filters - The Healthiest Alternative Available
Drinking water filters are one of the most important things that you can invest in for the vigour of your family. A right system will fix up with provision the water that you need on a day-to-day basis without the risk of chemicals and other contaminants. This is paramount for protecting the aegis of your bloodline. The nicest drinking water that is available is the type that been filtered.
However, not all drinking water filter systems are the same. There are some types that de-mineralize water which is not recommended. There have been many studies that show our bodies need these minerals to remain healthy. The minerals also give the water a better taste. In order to drink water it must taste good. So it makes sense to have a water system that delivers good, fresh tasting water.
Water is essential to life and children are more susceptible to water borne illness than adults. The potential for health risks is far more than what you realize. Especially today with all the chemicals and contaminants that are released into the water we drink. The government says water is regulated but what they mean by this is that municipalities add chlorine to their water. While this may have been fine to stop cholera and typhoid, we have moved beyond those days.
