I put the following question on the Enviroment site and realized I should have put it in engineering. The concensis was that it would be too expensive when cheaper water is available, which I assume means bottled water trucked in. I'd still like to know if the units could be redesigned to be run more efficiently and be mass produced should potable water NOT be available.
The military claims that some of it's units can remove hazardous chemicals as well as radioactive waste.
The question was posed:
Can the military's ROWPU be used for providing potable water anywhere?
I've read that, in Iraq, the Marine's Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Units have removed cyanide and mustard-gas agents from Euphrates River water and created pure safe drinking water. I realize the output of these units are limited, but, can they be used daily for community drinking water here, where we're warned not to drink our slightly radioactive well water
Like most engineering units reverse osmosis units are cheaper when one has one or two (to allow for outage) large ones rather than many small ones. I understand the pressure drop required (and hence the power consumption) depends on the concentration of salts and if this is low the power consumption can be very muched reduced. They have been considered for purification of brackish water in London on quite a large scale. The army would not be your only possible source of supply of such units as many are used in various parts of the world. This is part 1 of a 2 part series on how you can configure a working whole-house RO system.
I have been working in the plumbing and heating business for 35 years, and have worked in hospitals and dyalisys units. Reverse osmosis water is only transported in plastic pipe, because it "eats" copper, galvonized , iron, or even stainless pipe. My question is, if it has such an affinity to metals, wouldn't it have the same effect on your body? Deplete minerals as opposed to providing them?
If you drink the extremely purified stuff, such as used in semiconductor manufacturing, you get nauseated. And it tastes vile! Try a swig, you'll hate it.
It's used in dialysis because they have to tightly control the mineral content of the water used.
The ordinary R-O units in homes don't take that much out, and are more for flavor than purity.
Do they make reverse osmosis units that do not have to be installed into my existing home plumbing system? I am wanting one for my saltwater tank, so I don't need anything that is permanent. I have never used or dealt with one of these before so I am clueless. Do they make a kind that I can pour the water into it and the unit purifies it and pumps it into a container? As many details as possible would be great. Thanks in advance.
All decent RO units can be run off an outside garden tap with a 1/2 inch screw thread type end using the necessary adapter. The unit can be connected, used and then disconnected and stored till the next time. Never drain the RO unit of water if your are storing it like this as the membrane will dry out.
FYI RO units are pressurized systems so you will not find one that you can simply pour water into...the only things like that are DI resin type cartridges that connect to sink taps, they tend to be very inefficient and costly to run as the resin exhausts quite rapidly.

It forces the water to go against the solute concentration gradient. So, this will force water from areas of high solute concentration to areas of low solute concentration. This makes sense in purifying water since you do not want to be drinking any type of solute, just the water. Essentially, you are forcing the water away from the solutes (things you do not want to drink) by forcing it to go against its concentration gradient (thus the term Reverse osmosis).
The main components of an RO system are a high pressure water pump that forces the water through membranes to seperate the salt from fresh water.

Countertop Reverse Osmosis - The Full-Sized And Compact Countertop ...
If there are under sink reverse osmosis systems, you also have the countertop reverse osmosis treatment.
Currently, the best ones are those that have the same filters and membranes of larger versions of under sink units.
This way, even your countertop RO system will be able to produce the same kind of excellent quality and production rate.
At first glance, the countertop reverse osmosis system is the one you place on top of your kitchen cabinet.
But its real function goes beyond convenience and perhaps aesthetics. The system itself refers to the type of RO unit that can produce water directly into the container.
There is no need to make use of a storage tank, which is very common among under sink RO units. This permits for the elimination of other parts that you can find in the latter, such as check valves, as well as the instant shutoff system.
Thus, countertop reverse osmosis units are basically much cheaper and simpler to operate and maintain.

Will a reverse osmosis unit from Home Depot do the job for my make up water in my tank or do I need a deionizing unit with it? I can get the RO unit from Home Depot where I have a card and money is a concern, I am concerned because I can not get rid of the brown algae and I'm sure this will go a long way in curing the problem. My question is are these units from Home Depot ok to use one, and two what does the deionizing unit do and do I need it? Thanks for your help in advance.
