Berkey Water Filter problem?

I just purchased a Berkey water filter and installed all the components and even tried conditioning them, but my water still continues to look very cloudy. What's wrong?

Could be because it is still a new component, Try emptying it out and starting again.

Learn about Berkey Water Filters

Have you used a Berkey water filter? Do you think it is the best option?

I would like my water to be fluoride and heavy metal free.

I use a Britta pitcher with a filter, works fine.

Berkey water filters any good?

Hello,

I am thinking in buying a Big berkey filter to remove the chlorine, fluoride and other contaminates from the water. However, there isn't alot of info concerning this filter online. How does this filter compare to distilled filters? I know this filter won't increase the ph level of the water, but exactly what is the ph level of filtered water?
For those who have this filter do you recommend it?

Thanks

Filters of purifiers should not affect the PH balance of water. A distillery does.

Keep in mind that you get what you pay for. Most water systems are simple filters. They improve taste and smell and little, if anything else. Purifiers also improve color and many health effects in water.

I have not heard of berkey myself. I would think that they would have their own web site. You can try different places on the net too.

www.consumerreports.com - though they charge a subscription fee.
www.wqa.org - Water Quality Association
www.nsf.com - National Sanitation Foundation International

If you only want to improve the taste then simply get the cheapest thing you can find. Like a Pur or Brita. If you want something to actually make the water safer then I always recommend eSpring. It is the highest rated system and has been used on Extreme Makeover, Home Edition.

Cleaning the Sport Berkey water filter?

Hey, I have a Sport Berkey and I'm not quite sure about maintenance and cleaning. The official brochure doesn't give much information. What do you do about the straw tip? I know that'll get gross after a while. Does the inside of the container ever get "slimy"? How long can I leave it filled up with water just sitting in it? Will the plastic from the container ever leach into the water and if it does can that get filtered out too?
Yeah, um... that link doesn't help at all. I've been there already. Nice try though.

If I accidentally stored my Berkey black filter elements wet, are they unusable?

I have a travel Berkey water filtration system. I put the filter away for a few months, and when I got it out again, a rust-colored, mildew-appearing substance had grown on the outside of the black filtration elements. What do I have to do to make them usable again, or should I buy new ones?

I would buy new ones. It's better to be safe....... :)

Berkey Light Water Filter Review

Here are some of the stats on the Berkey Light filter:

Can process 6000 gallons of water 2 1/2 gallon storage chamber Filters 3.75 gallons of water per hour Includes elevated base

Set up for the water filter is quite easy.  There are three main pieces: the upper chamber, lower chamber, and base.  All three simply snap together.  The spigot and filters are fitted with some washers and thumb nuts.  Setup is 5 minutes if you are taking it slow.

The first thing that you must do before filtering water is to prime the filters.  Berkey provides a rubber gasket that you can to prime the filter from any water tap.  My concern is that what if you are using an untrusted water source to prime your water?  In that instance you are going to have to toss out the first couple of gallons of water, then thoroughly clean the bottom chamber.  If you don’t have access to any pressurized water source then you can get your filter to 70% efficiency by soaking the filter nozzle side up in water for several hours.  If you use this method then make sure that the nozzle is above water.  The Berkey FAQ provides additional insight into how the filters work.

Daily Pundit » My Berkey Water Filter Arrived Today…

It took about two minutes to set up, mostly involving priming the two filters, snapping everything together, and filling it with 2.5 gallons of water.

The makers recommend testing it by dumping some food coloring into the water. If the filter is working properly, it will take the coloring out of the water.

It seems to work. The water came out crystal clear.

This is legally classified as a “water purifier.” The FDA only permits three technologies to do this - distillation, reverse osmosis, and ceramic filters. The Berkey is a ceramic filter purifier. It removes bacteria, viruses, chemicals, and heavy metals.

The filters I have will last for 3000 gallons apiece. I have both operating, but I could plug one of the holes and use them consectutively for a total of 6000 gallons of purification.

I’ll probably buy a backup set of filters. A pair of them costs $100. Should handle my pure water needs for the next couple of decades, used singly.
