First time using Yahoo Answers, so I posted this twice in hopes someone would see it:

What water purifier should I buy? I need to buy a water purifier for use on camping trips (usually 1-2 weeks) in the Canadian Wilderness. The water is never polluted, but sometimes muddy/cloudy. Usually have 2 or 3 other people with me, so need to get about 10 litres a day. I'm looking for something I will have to buy only once, so money is not a consideration: 1.) What brand and model would you suggest? Please include details such as whether chemicals are needed / pros and cons / what kind of filter you'd suggest, etc.... 2.) Are Katadyn and PUR the same brand? Can you still find replacement stuff for PUR filters/purifiers? 3.) Do I need a purifier or just a filter to have safe drinking water in north Candian rivers, lakes where the only pollutants would be the occasional motor boat (such as Algonquin Park)? Thanks....I'm getting desperate for info!!!!

PUR was purchased by Katadyn who continue produce the award winning and very popular Hiker model, now called the Katadyn Hiker. The replacement filters still work on the old PUR Hiker. I know because that's what I've used exclusively for the last ten years and have never had any reason to change. Right now I have a new replacement filter in my old Hiker, so I know it works.

Unless you're in a third world country where there's a chance of viruses in the water, you don't need a purifier. Here in the Sierras we just use filters so I would imagine that Canada would be just as clean.

I have a camp thats water supply is feed by a cistern from rain water. What is the best application for filtering this water before it is pumped into my camp. The main purpose of the water is to clean dishes, take baths and flush the head.

go to a home store and pick up two in line canister filter kits. they will have your choice of filter cartrige inserts. try a stanard filter and a carbon this should do you.

does anyone know how to make a water filter? i was going to go camping and i wanted to make a water filter or something that cleans the water so that if i "needed to" i could drink filtered mountain water. i didnt want to use chlorine or the pills that treat water. or can you give me a good website?

The main ingredient in water filters is charcoal. You can either buy activated charcoal, or make your own. Never make it from food, like toast—that's carcinogenic. Never use charcoal briquettes—they are made from petroleum, and thus are poison (for cooking too). 'They' say that hardwood makes the best charcoal. You could put the charcoal into a coffee filter or something.

I would boil the water, and then put it through the charcoal to get any microbes that can survive boiling. Trust me—charcoal works—it attracts all sorts of toxins / microbials.

You can eat charcoal dry or you can mix it with water and drink a little here and there—all the time—not just when on vacation. If you're ever exposed to toxins / microbials, consume charcoal several times a day. Our ancestors used it until they discovered drugs (with all their destructive side effects). ♪♫

im doing a science fair project where im comparing how effective certain filters are. i ordered one called a Lifestraw, and im getting a camping filter. i want to make a simple, easy to make one myself to compare with the camping filter and Lifestraw. any ideas???

If you live in a city, you may have problems making one of these very simply & effective water filters.

Materials:
Brown clay (dry) - 2 big handfuls.
Used coffee grounds - 1 handful.
Cow manure (dry) - 10 to 15 dry "patties".
Sunlight.
Time.

Method:
Mix the coffee grounds with the dry clay so that both ingredients are evenly mixed.
Add enough water to make this mixture it into a "putty".
Shape this into a small cup.
Allow to dry in the sun.
Pile the cow pats into a heap & set them alight.
When burning well, put the clay cup in the fire.

Clay (without the coffee grounds) is used in many 3rd world countries where clean water & electricity/gas (& other technologies) are not readily available.
The addition of the coffee grounds allows the water to flow quicker through the clay but traps dangerous E. coli bacteria. I saw one of these made in Australia (I'm Australian but live in Thailand).

My buddies and I have been camping a few times and we want to start getting more hardcore about it... on our next trip coming up, we want to go somewhere totally out in the wilderness where there are no amenities. Any hardcore campers out there, care to share with me how you filter your drinking water?

well i always put it through a clean t shirt to get the leaves or dirt or what ever and then somthimes ill just put some tablets but most of the time if i have enought time to do it ill boil the water to. the t shirt gets rid of the nasty things and boiling it kills the germs or bacteria. try to find running water like a stream
