carbon filter?

How do you use a whisper carbon filter? I have a 5 gal tank with a filter that came with it. Do you just take out entire filter and put a new one in? I have heard that you keep the white meshy stuff just open the meshy and replace with fresh carbon from another filter bag. I am so confused. My tank is not cycled yet I have only had it for 2 months

2 months is a long time to cycle a 5 gallon tank.

Are you sure you're doing it properly? http://homepage.ntlworld.com/faustus/nic oldaquaria/fishless.htm

You don't change the filter media, you rinse it in old tank water when you do a water change. Every 6-8 weeks you remove a portion of it and replace with new.

The filter media is where the bacteria live, if you throw the media away you're also throwing away the bacteria that you've spent the last 2 months trying to colonize.

I've never used that filter before, but if you go to the store where you bought it and ask them to demonstrate it, I'm sure they'll be happy to.

How long can you keep the carbon filter out?
LP640

My fish have a case of fungus. I'm treating it right now with drop in tablets. To use these tablets you have to take out the carbon filter, I assume so the carbon filter doesn't filter out the meds.

It says to give the meds 4 days to work, and if the fungus isn't completely gone to do a 20-25% water change and add another dose.

I plan on doing a second dose. One reason being just so i'm sure it worked, and second i've read a few places that people do a minimum treatment of 7 days.

My question is, is it safe to have the carbon filter out for that long? A probable 8 days. Should I put it back in for a day or two between the two fungus treatments. Or would that extract any left over medication from the first dose, even with in between water change, that needs to be there to help the second dose?

This happened to me!
I left out the filter with no problem. My treatment lasted 10 days. I did have an undergravel filter going though. I did 2 treatments as well and didn't wait between them. I did both back to back.
Hope this helps.

Can the activated carbon used by home brewers (to distill alcohol) be used as a water filter?
Bugatti Veyron 16.4

I spend $35 to replace the carbon filter on my water filter/pitcher every few months. Would the activated carbon used by home distillers be as good an option to filter my water? The exact brand I'm thinking about is Prestige stone activated carbon (.4-1.4mm), and I would be running it through a coffee filter in the existing housing on my water pitcher.

Can any chemists - amateur or professional - tell me if this would be a good or bad idea?

Not sure but if you want more information on filters look up the website for a company callled CUNO.

Can beneficial bacteria go through carbon filter pads?
LP640

I plan to seed a tank and want to put the used filter media behind the carbon filter (that the only way it can fit). It is a 10 gallon power filter. The tank is 5.5 gallons. So can beneficial bacteria go through carbon filter pads?

Also, do artificial used plants have beneficial bacteria on them?

Yes and yes. Really you don't need to put the pad in the filter you can just put it in the tank if you want.

Yes anything that is in an established tank will have bacteria on them.

Why does my 30 startup tank not have a carbon filter?
LP640

It has only the bio filter but not a slot for a carbon filter.

carbon filter usually sold separately and you can put a net then mixed with other stuff in your chamber.

how does carbon filter work? - Grasscity.com Forums

When carbon becomes " activated" it means it has been cooked at a very high temperature, the temperature is hot enough that it makes the surface of the carbon bubble up sort of like it was boiling. Because of this cooking process once the carbon cools there are millions of pores left behind on the surface of the carbon. This is where the odors are captured. When you smell something, you are inhaling small particles of whatever it is you are smelling atr the time ( kinda gross when you think of all the things you have smelled. So with the carbon filter, the air is sucked in, or blown through a tightly packed bed of activated carbon. The pores mentioned before capture these small particles of whatever odor you are trying to eliminate. Thus leaving the air that passes through almost devoid of any odors.
