I believe you have to with a sand filter, but I'm not sure about a cartridge filter. Any help would be greatly appreciated...... also does anyone know how much I should backfill around the sides around an aboveground pool?
You don't backwash cartridge filters... to clean them you take them out and hose the dirt off, or soak it in a cleaner solution when it becomes necessary (when hosing alone doesn't do it anymore...)
This is an instructional video made by Teddy Bear Pools Spas for Operating and Cleaning Your Cartridge Filter (AG)
We must find a cartridge filter for our swimming pool as we cannot backwash. Our pool area borders a wetland and backwashing into a wetland is environmentally disastrous (and, not to mention, illegal.) So, sand and DE filters, and the like, are out of the question.
Hmmmm. Well cartridge filters come in all sorts of sizes. The things to keep in mind are size of pump, frequency of cleaning, and replacement cartridge cost. Size of pump is important because you don't want to UNDERsize the filter. Typically cartridge filters work on a flow rate of 1 gallon per minute per square foot of filter surface. There is some variation, however. DO NOT buy one too small for the pump horsepower. Frequency of cleaning depends on the size of the cartridge. Larger filters require less frequent cleaning. Cleaning the thing is not a big deal, but it is somewhat troublesome. Replacement cost for cartridges can vary all over the scale. Some are under a hundred bucks. Others are several hundreds! Check out replacement costs BEFORE you buy. It is a really good idea to purchase a "spare" when you buy your filter. If you do it right the dealer will make you a discount on the spare cartridge when you buy the filter. `Having a spare allows you time to clean the dirty filter at your leisure. Just install the spare and clean the dirty one later. Also, compare warranties on filters. Some are practically non-existant, others are quite generous. (Remember, companies seldom warrant anything that costs them money to repair/replace.) Warranty comparison is a good yardstick.

pool is an Intex 16'x4' 5800gallon pool came with a small disposalbe cartridge filter. Is it possible to use a bigger pum? Can a sand filter be used?
It's quite possible to go to a larger pump and filter. It's not something I suggest a homeowner to do, but a Pool tech can do this easily. As someone had pointed out, the suction and return side needs to go to 1 1/2 inch . Getting a through wall fitting to do this is actually easy and they are avaliable. It can be done easily with no leaks, providing you know what you're doing or you get a pool tech in.
It's the thru wall fittings that will be the make or break you'll have to use an inground vinyl pool return fitting and on the suction side the same thing, but with a safety approved suction grate threaded on, the plumbing for the filter and pump will be child's play.
Before you start any of this, check with your local codes, as far as entrapment issues. Municipalities all tend to differ and you may have to add a 'T" inside the pool on the suction side and add another grate. You may not even be allowed to change the design period

It is a paper element type, could it be a weekness in the moulded plastic end of the cartridge or pehaps just to much presure . Is there a better type of filter i should use for this six person size spa. Thanks.
I've never purchased my filters from the manufacturer. I just go online and start searching around for a replacement filter that is manufacturered by someone else. So I only pay about $20 for a filter - but still it shouldn't be breaking every month. Especially since it's such an expensive filter
Your questions are good with regards to possible causes. I would call the spa vendor and start asking about pump sizes and pressure levels. Or, call an independent spa service technician and have them come out. You'll pay some money for the visit, but if it solves your problem it's likely worth it.
Is this a new spa? If so, you should be able to call the company that sold it to you.
Have you had work done on the spa, changed out a pump perhaps? If so, you should be able to call the technician who did the work and quiz them about possible problems or solutions.
Did you just move into a house with a spa? If so, then I would call a technician out to "check out" the spa and ask a million questions about spa upkeep and maintenance while he was there (to make it worth your money.)
Feel free to email me if you want to "talk spas." We recently moved into a house with an old spa and I spent a lot of time learning about spas and spa maintenance.
Good luck!
I just need to know how often to change the filter cartridge. I know not to remove the carbon part of the filter. I have a filter that uses two cartridges at a time and therefore has two streams of water coming out from it. I have heard that you need to change it every month but I was just looking for a definite answer. will pick best answer.
sorry I don't think I mean carbon, I am talking about the sponge looking thing that is made of black stringy material.
I just got my name from a Devin the Dude song. its classic.
In my 60 gallon I have 2 60 gallon filters. You're supposed to change he cartridege once every 3-4 weeks, like the water change. However, beneficial bacteria can build up on/in them. You say you have two filter cartridges? What I do is change the left side, wait two weeks, change the right side, wait two weeks, change the left side and so on. This way I'm not removing all the good bacteria that can build up all at once.
You do need to change the carbon though. Unless you reactivate it, (I'm not 100 percent on the actual procedure to do this, but I believe a salt bath is involved), the carbon will "fill up". It does have a max capacity, and needs to be changed to keep optimum water health. I'd change one, wait, and change the other and so on.
Best of Luck!
EDIT:
Ahhh, then yes you are right. The sponge filter should be left in. If it's looking really dirty, rinse in the tanks water, never tap water. This can damage the beneficial bacteria that lives in it.

Shop-Vac 90304 Dry/Wet Cartridge Filter
Like most homeowners I do a variety of jobs around the house that require various tools. My wet/dry vac is one of the most important tools to me (or more importantly my wife) as it helps me clean up all the messes I make when doing these jobs. This filter does a great job when it is new as it keeps all the dirt/sawdust/leaves/etc I pick up with it in the container. However, after using it sporadically over a few months the filter gets clogged with all these various things, especially if there is any moisture. When I try and clean it out it works ok but not great as it just continues to get clogged. Overall it does what it is supposed to I just don't like replacing the filter every few months.... Anyone have comments on Craftsman dust collectors? - BT3Central Forums
This forum is for any topic that you would normally talk about at the office "around the coffee pot". Jokes, tall tales, and true stories are welcome as long as they are clean and in good taste. I only ask that you steer away from topics on religion or politics. Go ahead and pull up a chair and pour yourself a cup of coffee and enjoy the conversation. 1200 CFM should be plenty for you. I would look into geting a 1 micron bag, or even a 5 micron bag, or cartridge for it as others have said, mostly to just keep the dust in the shop down, so it doesn't get so thick on everything. An air filtration unit is also a nice addition in keeping the dust down. For your palm sander I would use a shop vac. Even with all that, I would still recommend a good dust mask. AOSafety sells a Woodworkers resperator with replaceable filters that is very reasonablly priced, and so are the filters for it. Dust collection generally just keeps the dust from accumulating on everything in the shop at a slower rate,...
