Does anyone here have the Clean and Pure counter-top water filter?

We just saw this product on hsn and it looks wonderful. Apparently there is a 15,000 gallon version and then this new version that we saw which was 20,000 gallons. Supposedly you don't have to change the filter for 20 years or 20,000 gallons of water! That seems amazing. We have the Pur water filter right now and we constantly have to buy new filters, this product would be a money saver! Anyone have any opinions on this? Here is a link to the product...

I don't have this product and was initially tempted to order it. However, after doing a little more research through the web I found out it is only certified by the NSF as follows:

P3060 Tested and Certified by NSF International to NSF/ANSI Standard 42 for the aesthetic reduction of Chlorine.

Just FYI-- it's made by Paragon Water Company, Inc and listed under the wholesale division for distributors. They also have a consumer division you may want to look at for more purification and filtering properties. Of course with these models you do need to purchase replacement filters about once a year or after 500 gallons usage.(http://www.paragonwater.com/wholesale_ma intenance_free.html)
>> Also, you can see the same certification approval on the NSF.org website (http://www.nsf.org/Certified/consumer/li stings_results_detail.asp?prod_desc=P306 0&cust_id=24540&search_tbl=ols_d wtu&search_field=model_desc_search&a mp;std_id=&com_detail=Y&prog_dir =DWTU&prog_add=N&link_field=mode l_desc_search&final_detail=Y&fin al_filter=P3060&field_text=Product%2 0Name)

Is it difficult to make a homemade drinking water filter?

I only need a small water filter, counter top. I don't know why I can't make one, but it has been difficult to find information, instruction or ingredients.

I would think that carbon would be one ingredient. I want the water to taste better, and remove the bad minerals, and organisms. I don't want to remove the good minerals.

I live in a high rise that is about 60 years old, and it uses city water. The city is on the shore of Lake Michigan.

I really don't want to put a lot of money into buying a counter top water filter system, since I'm on Social Security, and have to cut costs as many ways as possible.

Some things I've learned in my searches, is that the carbon can become contaminated over time, and should be changed periodicly. I also learned that batting below the carbon can remove small pieces of the carbon. But, are there other ingredients I need, and how do I build it?

If your water is coming from lake michigan, then your water has allready been filtered by carbon or anthracite. The municipal city water filters are built like this: bottom layer is gravel, then the next layer is "green" sand. These both act as mechanical filters. The top layer is Carbon or anthracite. There is a bunch of other filtering and separation that takes place before it gets to the carbon. Anyway, the carbon beds act as a type of "polishing" filter before it is chemically treated and distributed to the users.

If your water tastes bad or has odor... your idea of a carbon filter may work but due to the age of your building... you may be experiencing some pipe issues. Either way, a home filter will help a little bit. Your best bet is to call your municipal water department and make a complaint. They can sample your water and also test for lead and other impurities.

Carbon filters do become spent through use and must be changed out periodically.

Having said all that... at the current cost of carbon and the other materials needed to make your homemade filter... go buy a Brita filter. You'll save a ton of money.

My 2 cents and 2 points.

Can a cultured marble counter top support a full 20-30 gallon aquarium?

In my bedroom I am planning to get a fish tank. I'm planning on it being to be about 20-30 gallons. So we are talking about 166.8 to 250.2 pounds in terms of water. With a high estimate of 60 pounds of other things (filter, weight of tank, rocks, filter, decorations, etc.) In total, the aquarium will be around 226.8 to 310.2 pounds. I was originally planning to set it on my counter top, which is cultured marble. The fact of the matter is that cultured marble can bend or warp with excessive weight. I'm not knowledgeable enough about cultured marble but I don't want to set the aquarium up until I have a good enough idea that it will be ok to set it up there.

Well, if it is cultured marble that is meant to be used as for counter tops and not the other kinds like shower panels then it should be fine. If you cultured marble has a bullnose then you might want reinforce the bottom of the marble with a thick peice of plywood and gluing all around in between with liquid nails (this will help prevent the marble to warp and keep it straight).

Choosing a Water Filtration System: Where to start?

So you think you might want to get a water filter system for your home or office, to get rid of contamination or poor water quality, but you don’t have a clue where to start?

Water filter systems come in a vast array of styles and specifications, from really simple pitchers costing very little or a counter top, faucet mount unit which can be very easy to install. These don’t usually need any special tools and are relatively cheap to install.

Full house filter systems tend to have between 12-16 stages of filtration and can cost well over one thousand dollars.

There are lots of models available from different manufacturers to suite most budgets and requirements, but basically you get what you pay for.

Countertop units are good because of their ease of installation, whereas the undersink versions are good if you don’t want to see the unit, both are pretty straight forward to install with the countertop being the easiest.

Two Reasons Why You Should Consider Installing A Water Filter | HGDEC

Two Reasons Why You Should Consider Installing A Water Filter

There can be a lot of reasons for thinking about installing water filtration, but here we will look at two of the usual reasons why people think about installing water filter systems.

Firstly, there can be a large number of contaminants that may effect your water quality, sometimes this also leads to concerns over the families health and well being.

Secondly, there is quite simply the taste of the water, even though it may be safe to drink, the treatment processes that water goes through may not leave a taste that suites everyone, both of these factors can vary a lot depending on your location.

One of the leading suppliers of water filtration systems is a company called Crystal Quest®, they have a vast range available from simple pitchers to whole house systems, you can find more about choosing Crystal Quest Water Filters Systems here.

If we consider contaminants first, these may be in the form of sediments or particles contained in the water, then there may be bacteria, viruses and cysts present.
