I'm looking for a drinking water filter system. Which is the best?

I've used the Pur filter on my kitchen faucet for many years. I love this product. It's readily available at Costco (usually has the best price), Target, etc. It turns on and off easily with a knob.

I installed it myself without tools in a few minutes. The filters are also very easy to change. I've had this system for 4-5 years.

They have excellent customer service, too. Mine started leaking where it's attached to the faucet after a couple of years. I called Pur customer service and told them. They sent me a new adaptor at no charge right away.

Don't know what I did without it. My water tastes bad, and this filter makes it taste great. The filters last for months at a time, and we're pretty big water drinkers. I don't need to buy bottled water anymore.

Is it difficult to make a homemade drinking water filter?

I only need a small water filter, counter top. I don't know why I can't make one, but it has been difficult to find information, instruction or ingredients.

I would think that carbon would be one ingredient. I want the water to taste better, and remove the bad minerals, and organisms. I don't want to remove the good minerals.

I live in a high rise that is about 60 years old, and it uses city water. The city is on the shore of Lake Michigan.

I really don't want to put a lot of money into buying a counter top water filter system, since I'm on Social Security, and have to cut costs as many ways as possible.

Some things I've learned in my searches, is that the carbon can become contaminated over time, and should be changed periodicly. I also learned that batting below the carbon can remove small pieces of the carbon. But, are there other ingredients I need, and how do I build it?

If your water is coming from lake michigan, then your water has allready been filtered by carbon or anthracite. The municipal city water filters are built like this: bottom layer is gravel, then the next layer is "green" sand. These both act as mechanical filters. The top layer is Carbon or anthracite. There is a bunch of other filtering and separation that takes place before it gets to the carbon. Anyway, the carbon beds act as a type of "polishing" filter before it is chemically treated and distributed to the users.

If your water tastes bad or has odor... your idea of a carbon filter may work but due to the age of your building... you may be experiencing some pipe issues. Either way, a home filter will help a little bit. Your best bet is to call your municipal water department and make a complaint. They can sample your water and also test for lead and other impurities.

Carbon filters do become spent through use and must be changed out periodically.

Having said all that... at the current cost of carbon and the other materials needed to make your homemade filter... go buy a Brita filter. You'll save a ton of money.

My 2 cents and 2 points.

why wont water come out of my water filter system?

well you know that drinking water filter in the kitchen sink next to the standard faucet? i dont know why, but water wont come out. it worked in the morning but when i came home in the evening and tried to get a drink of water, nothing came out. the regular faucet next to it still works fine. i checked under the sink but no pipe/tube seems to be out of place. what could be wrong? i dont want to hire an expensive profesional....

Sounds like a clogged filter. Take the filter out and put a new one in...or at least take the old one out and check to see if something might have plugged the inlet hole. If it fairly new...try shaking it out the inlet hole and putting the filter back in.

best drinking water filter?

whats the best water filter, systems like brita or anything else. im planning to get 3 a pitcher filter a fridge filter and a faucet filter. i want something that taste similar to aquafina, dasini, or fresh and easy water.

Britta is only a basic filter. It does improve taste but it really does very little. Water purification systems are better. The highest rated system is an eSpring. Only a distillery can possibly get water cleaner. Ironically even though the basic system does cost more than a basic Britta system does the cost per gallon is less than Britta by year 2.

You are even raising your costs by getting 3 different ones. The cost per gallon will be the same after the initial purchase but now you have 3. With the eSpring you will need only one. The under counter system has a separate faucet from the regular water line. You can add a line to your fridge without using another filter cartridge. Then you can then just use a regular every day pitcher if you still want to keep water in one. That way it costs less than the Brita pitcher and holds more since it does not have to have it's own filter cartridge.

  • Under Sink Water Filters Are Economical And Efficient

Drinking filtered water is something most of us understand is beneficial to our health. Under sink water filters have many advantages over other types of water purification systems. Their ability to provide households with healthy, clear, fresh drinking water at all times is worth every penny.

Bottled water is very expensive and not always the best quality. It is difficult to store and handle and concerns grow about the effects of the plastic on the quality of the water. An under sink filter is out of the way and yet produces abundant clean water. Following are the benefits of an under sink filter.

An under sink water filter can give you purified water whenever you want it for less than 10 cents a gallon. The carbon block or granular filtration process is efficient and thorough. Under sink water filters do not take up space in your kitchen. They are out of sight and out of the way. If you have a small kitchen this will be a big advantage.

An under sink water filter is so simple to install you can do it yourself. Under sink filters remove organic materials and synthetic chemicals by using a carbon filtration system of purification. The distillation and reverse osmosis purification process on the other hand does not completely remove contaminants and still needs a carbon filter to complete the process.
