does a softener filter water as well? or do i need a filer system seperate?
It is unlikely that you will need a filtration system. The softener will take care of a lot of hardness that is in the water. However if you do want to put one in they are not real expensive. I have seen them at Lowe's for around $50.00. If you keep salt in the softener it should make enough of a difference that you won"t need it.

Water filtration systems need to have the filter elements changed out every year or so. If not, they no longer trap the contaminants, especially the odors that are usually caught by the carbon filters.

If I buy a water softener that has a built in whole house water filter, do I need to remove the filter on my water dispenser on my refridgerator so that my water isn't 'too' filtered? Someone told me that and I find that hard to believe, so I'm coming to the experts for advice. Thanks!

Well water is more difficult to purify than city water. I would not just go and listen to a water softener salesperson at say Sears to make a decision. I would call out a water expert and analyze the water for hard to remove substances commonly found in well water like iron, sulfur, nitrates and nitrites from fertilizers. Get their recommendations so if you do this you do it right. Once you remove the really bad stuff you may want to install a reverse osmosis system they work great. And the best place to buy one is on Ebay, they have the best systems and the best prices.

The first thing I will recommend is to test your water first to see what type of water contamination you have.
If your water does not sud enough and if you have to use a lot of detergents and soaps, see staining on your sinks, tubs, showers, or if you water flows very slowly because your pipes and showerhead are plugged, you need a water softener. Softener will remove calcium and magnesium that makes your water hard and cause deposits in your pipes and appliances.
If you have bad taste and odor in your water then you need a filter to remove contaminants that make your water taste bad.
There are water treatment systems that work as both filter and softener but they could be very expensive. You can also find an activated carbon filter systems that are very affordable and work excellently. So, take your time and research, if possible, test your water first.
