If I buy a water softener that has a built in whole house water filter, do I need to remove the filter on my water dispenser on my refridgerator so that my water isn't 'too' filtered? Someone told me that and I find that hard to believe, so I'm coming to the experts for advice. Thanks!

No, you can't have too much filtration the way you're doing it. The filter in the fridge will just last longer.

I got this never used water softener for free on freecycle.com so there is no installation included.
It is a sears brand so I think sears might do it... was just curious how much it costs...

Well if you live near a Lowe's, call them and ask for there price. If not , My installation prices run between 225.00 thru 450. plus material. Thats a average for my area. Major cities maybe more. You can do it yourself if you feel that you can cut pipe and install the no tool required type push fittings called shark bite. Good luck
toliets at Lowes run around 100.00 labor I charge 150 and hall off the old.

Well water is more difficult to purify than city water. I would not just go and listen to a water softener salesperson at say Sears to make a decision. I would call out a water expert and analyze the water for hard to remove substances commonly found in well water like iron, sulfur, nitrates and nitrites from fertilizers. Get their recommendations so if you do this you do it right. Once you remove the really bad stuff you may want to install a reverse osmosis system they work great. And the best place to buy one is on Ebay, they have the best systems and the best prices.

I have a Carico Whole House Water Softener System, which was installed in my home by the previous owner of the house. We've been living in this house for the past 3 years but I have not maintained it since I moved in. I don't have the service manual for this water softener unit and was wondering if anyone out there has heard of this system or has it installed at home? I know the salt has to be replaced in this system but have no idea how to do it. I'm a pretty hands on person, so if anyone has any suggestions on how to service this system, I would really appreciate it. I have to constantly clean my shower heads and kitchen faucets due to calcium deposits and I am wondering if its due to not maintaining this softener system. Please help!

I have also been wondering about this or something similar. We recently bought a Maytag fridge with a water filter. We are on well water and our water line to the fridge does NOT go through the water softener before it goes to the fridge. Husband says it would be easy to redo and have the water go through the softener and THEN to the fridge. But I’m wondering if that is necessary? Maybe necessary with well water I guess…thoughts?
