If you are trying to buy a metal tank for storing potable water then it will almost alway be made out of stainless steel. However, when it comes to plumbing with metal you are normally going to see copper. As a side not it seems like breweries as well as whiskey, scotch and bourbon distilleries seem to prefer copper tanks and pipes while wineries, vodka and rum seem to choose tanks and pipes made from stainless steel. It appears to me that copper can do both jobs yet copper tanks are nowhere to be found when it comes to home use. Why is that?
Copper is not often used in new construction anymore, but it is used for water systems because of it doesn't rust and is very easy to bend. It is soft and therefore creates good seals at joints and it also heats up quickly and bonds well with silver solder.
It is not used for tanks in the home because of its softness and its cost. Copper is far more expensive than stainless steel, and to make a tank that wont eventually collapse under its own weight you have to use a lot more metal, making the tank excessively heavy and expensive.

In the UK we experience a lot of rainfall yet still seem to have a water shortage. Why can't we have tanks that collect and filter rainwater from our roofs for drinking, washing, etc? I'm sure everybody would welcome one as it would save loads of money in water bills. Am I talking sense here or what?
Used to drink it all the time in Australia, the tanks have charcoal filters and all that gubbins to make it safe.
Here in Australia, I think the reason we have no tanks is because when our government decided years ago to open the doors to thousands of immigrants, they weren't thinking about the future water levels, hence, no warnings were givin & no mandatory tanks to be in place in new housing estates, however, my sister is building a home on the NSW/ACT boarder & she, by law, has to have a tank on her property. Crazy that it didn't happen years earlier. Good question hey, I'd be interested in other responses.

I have underground and overhead water tank for water storage in my bungalow. The tanks are cleaned every two months. How to make that water drinkable? what are possible solutions to make them pure before I drink. (other than using water purifier)
Please be careful when drinking from a source of stagnant water.
Your best approach may be to treat the water as the utilitys do, through chemical treatment or some type of approved fitration system.
You may also be able to utilize a reverse osmosis unit but they can be relatively expensive, slow and use quite a bit of water to produce a small amount of potable liquid. However, the unit can be located under a sink and are quite effective.
A less expensive faucet filter or whole house filter is designed to remove sediment and perhaps iron and manganese. They are not designed to render potable water from a contaminated source.
when you decide on your approach please have the water tested before consumption as the water must meet the EPAs "Safe Drinking Water Act".
To take advantage of the gravity which is free to provide water pressure and you do not need to use a pump every time you need water.

India, Punjab: Every village to have water storage tank with 15 ...
Sukhbir Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister Punjab has issued instructions to the Water Supply Department to construct tanks with minimum capacity of 15 days in every village in Punjab to ensure uninterrupted potable water supply.
Badal emphasized that this additional storage capacity was necessary especially for the villages being supplied potable water through canal based schemes. He said that due to rotational closure of canals for repair or any other reason, every village should have storage capacity equivalent to 15 days usage of the villages. The water supply department was asked to quickly the survey the villages and upgrade the capacity of the tank where ever required.
Taking a serious note of illegal water connections and tullu pumps installed on the water line, Badal instructed immediate removal of tullu pumps.
Badal said that besides installation of reverse osmosis (RO) treatment plants in every difficult village in Malwa and a belt of Majha being supplied water through canal based water supply schemes, double ultra filtration technology should be installed in all villages being supplied water supply through tubewells.

Director of UC-San Francisco's Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment, Dr. Woodruff knows a thing or two about the gaps in our system for regulating chemicals that impact reproductive health.
Dr. Woodruff discussed the potential for industry-encouraged delays in regulation and testing of chemicals for hormone disrupting effects pointing to the example of the pesticide, atrazine, as one chemical we already know is an hormone disruptor but has not been regulated based on that effect. My colleague, Jen Sass has blogged about atrazine and NRDC recently released a report on the widespread contamination of water sources throughout the U.S.
Though pesticides are not regulated based on hormone disrupting effects, there is at least a minimum amount of data that must be submitted to EPA before a pesticide is approved for use. However, this is not the case for the tens of thousands of non-pesticide chemicals which are used in everyday products. The radio interview went on to discuss weaknesses in the current law that regulates these chemicals, theToxic Substance Control Act. NRDC has been working with a larger coalition to reform this law to ensure that all chemicals are tested for safety before they are introduced into commerce. Dr. Woodruff also got her interviewer a little concerned about the chemical, triclosan , which is added to soap and other "antimicrobial" products. Triclosan is also an endocrine disrupting chemical that interferes with thryoid hormone, a hormone important for proper development of the brain and nervous system.
