How far (distance) should I expect my neighbor's water well drilling to effect MY water well?
080803leonsteber3684

One of my nearby neighbors is drilling a new water well to their house.

This neighbor's drilling is almost 100 feet from my water well, located in my yard. I am hoping that this will not make my water dirty during the next few day's time.

(I can tell by the sediment in my well water when Ruidosa, N.M. gets rainfall when my water gets murky. - I am in Amarillo, Tx.)

Depending on the depth of his well. If is close to the same depth as yours you will be taping the same aquifer or water supply.
These aquifers (below ground pools of water) sometimes have a directional flow. If you are on the downward flow side you may notice some discoloring from the disturbed pool of water.
What is more important is that his new well stay 200 feet or so away from his and your septic fields. I assume you are on septic systems if you do not have city water?
There is usually a county code saying how far from a septic the well must be.
I would imagine your well supply has plenty of water for another user, since he had a well already and is just drilling a new one.

Can anyone tell me about water well drilling?

I need to have a well put in , at least 200 ft. I live in a county of San Diego. Im looking for all info on the process, cost of water wells. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

It doesn't have to be an unpleasant process.

Start by asking property owners around you about their wells.
Ask depth, how was the soil to drill through, etc. Believe me,
most homeowners are quick to share this stuff with you.

Ask for several professional quotes. Well drillers usually only quote a per foot rate. So, if they hit water at 200 feet, fine. If not, they'll need to keep drilling, and keep adding to the cost. I've never heard of a driller giving any guarantee.

The driller who seems to have done the most IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD is usually the most knowledgable.
They can speculate about underground rocks, caverns, and more. (Usually NEITHER are an issue)

If you also need a new well pump, shower/toilet/sink, etc, you might ask the driller.
However, they are in the drilling business, and other services (even installing the pump) are usually best contracted out to a separate contractor.

And, make sure the driller, well pump installer, and plumber (if you use 3 separate contractors) talk to each other.
In my experience, many have already worked together on other sites.

Ask your contractors to obtain necessary permits, and be there for all inspections. It's a good learning process for you to be there, too.

And, ask about "after the work" conditions. Are they going to (or do you need to) grade the earth, plant grass seed, straw, etc.

If you can get this kind of "team" together, they can make it pretty easy on the homeowner. Good Luck

The water company is drilling a well behind my house and making tons of noise, who can I complain to?

When I bought the home and had it built 3 years ago the builder said there was a well behind the house but the water was contaminated and the city I live in get its water from canals. Last year they starting drilling 24/7 making tons of noise and my wife and I had to sleep with earplugs it was so bad. I called the city they said to call the water company they said it is a good well and a source of water for the city and there was nothing I could do. Ive even called the police for noise complaints but to no avail. the workers stopped for 6 months and we thought it was finally over and now there back working in this well installing pumps and making noise from 7am to 7pm every day and we get no peace and quiet. Is there an attorney or somebody out there the knows what I can do, this well is literally 40 to 50 feet from my house and these diesel rigs shake my house and the exhaust fumes prevent me from even going outside. Can I fight this and win? I dont want to move, am I just screwed?

you're screwed. most cities have a noise ordinance, but that only goes into effect after 9 pm or later. so i would suggest you just bide your time and wait til they are done. besides. the work they're doing may increase your property value!!

Any such product as insurance for drilling a new water well on own property and coming up dry?
Foraje puturi apa (0734633104), www.apaforaj.com / U80 6HP ultralight water well drilling rig, 2in 5.5HP mud pump (trash pump)

I buy a parcel of property with no water, hire a well drilling company, and after drilling, it comes up dry...no water. So, the property is worthless. Can this type of event be insured so I can recover the cost of drilling, and the cost of the parcel of land?

Whatever Chris. You apparently worked in an area that has plentiful groundwater resources. Ever pick up a Water Well Journal or National Drillers?

While it is true that there are many areas where potable groundwater is available, it is also true that not all places on earth have good groundwater easy to reach. Just ask the Saudis. There are some areas in my locale where obtaining water is impossible before hitting natural gas or brine. I am aware of areas underlain by crystaline rock that are notorious for dry holes.

As for insurance, i know of none. You may want to contact a lawyer for info on previous owners responsibilities.

I assume you and your well drilling contractor had some kind of understanding as to what would be your financial obligations if the well was dry. When I contract to drill a well in an area that is difficult I spell the terms right out in the contract. These areas often have cheap land prices. Usually I don't mention dry holes because I know that it won't happen. Sometimes I have dry holes without an understanding with the customer that I will get paid regardless. When that happens, I swallow it and don't charge the customer for that hole. Any additional attempts I make I expect to be paid.

Just for kicks, you may want to contact other drillers in the area and see what they have to say. Just tell them you need a well and ask them about what happens with a dry hole. I'm sure they will ask you exactly where you are located.

Depending on your situation, you may be able to hydrofrac the hole.

Best of luck to you. In the future I would suggest that water be found on any property you buy BEFORE closing.

need info on cost for drilling a water well & also installing a septic?
Foraje puturi apa (0734633104), www.apaforaj.com / U80 6HP ultralight water well drilling rig, 2in 5.5HP mud pump (trash pump)

can two households both draw off a single well?
would two septics be needed for two households?
how is the well water conected to household plumming?

The very best way to get an idea of these costs is to talk with several local contractors who do this kind work. They are almost always willing to give you a ball park estimate.

When we were making up a budget for our new house, that is exactly what we did.

EPA admits water contaminated near gas-drilling sites « Fire Earth

Now, for the first time ever, EPA scientists have revealed that drinking water wells  near natural gas [and oil] drilling operations contain chemical contaminants. They found dangerous chemicals in the water from 11 of 39 wells tested near the Wyoming town of Pavillion in March and May 2009.  Unfortunately, their report  falls shy of concluding what causes the contamination, though it admits the gas drilling is a potential source.

Researchers say these chemicals may cause cancer, kidney failure, anemia and low fertility problems, and pose serious health risks to people who live close to the drilling sites, Reuters reported .

As of March 2009, EPA has designated 77 Sole Source Aquifers nationwide. Five of these are in Region 8 (which includes Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming). EPA defines a Sole Source Aquifer as one which supplies at least 50 percent of the drinking water consumed in the area overlying the aquifer. EPA guidelines also stipulate that these areas can have no alternative drinking water source(s) which could physically, legally, and economically supply all those who depend upon the aquifer for drinking water. Sole source aquifer designation provides only limited federal protection of ground water resources which serve as drinking water supplies. It is not a comprehensive ground water protection program. Protection of ground water resources can best be achieved through an integrated and coordinated combination of federal, state, and local efforts. (Source:  EPA website .)
