why is whole house water filter making banging noises?

The house we recently purchased has a whole house water filter system. When we purchased the house, there was no filter installed, and the water was bypassing the system. We purchased a filter, shut off the bypass and have the water going through the filter. However, whenever we shut off the water anywhere in the house, we hear a banging noise - any ideas why and how we could stop it?

you could have air trapped in the line. you need to bleed the air and may need to install a water hammer. you might need to make sure that the water line is secured

are reverse osmosis water filtering system for the whole house worth the costs? I saw one for 5000.00?

Is this a good investment? are there more cheaper systems?

Most definately not. RO water is great for drinking because all the impurities have been removed. Do you realy need this pure of water to bathe in, wash clothes, flush toilets, etc? An activated carbon water filter to remove chlorine if you are on a public system. a solids filter is not necessary unless it is a domestic well. Why not soften your water, and install an undersink RO for consumption only? All for less than $2000?

Water filter for Well water...whole house?

We have a well that produces good water, but at different times of the year, the water becomes cloudy, brown, etc. The well is nowhere near the septic tank, of course, so any filtering system that contains a backflush process is out of the question...nowhere for the waste water to go.

The system has a pressure pump (set to 55 PSI) and a large accumulator tank. From there, the 2" pipe goes to irrigation and to the house. I know I'll have to re-plumb most of that to separate the outside from the house water. What kind of filter do I need? There are only 2 of us, so our use isn't huge. I just want to keep the discoloration and scale down. This is Oregon and the water is fairly good. We will continue to use either Brita or a filter for the drinking water. There seems to be a very wide range of products from $10 to well over $1000. I just want to find something that works. Not sure if I need to worry about UV??? Thanks
I've used Culligan elsewhere. Overpriced to say the least, but that system requires backflush...where the flushing water must go into a septic tank/sewer...which is not accessible.

County doesn't provide a testing service here...
The output of the pump and accumulator goes directly into the concrete of the well-house. Two pipes...one for irrigation and one for the house. They are connected with no backflow device as they are inside the building. Pipe now goes to a valve then Ts to the house line (in concrete) and to a 2nd valve that Ts to the irrigation line (in concrete) and to a faucet attached to the outside.

I need to re-plumb so I have more control (to turn off house but leave on irrigation, etc), and I can figure that out...but where and how and what sort of backflush relief can I get...and I don't want the released water to fall inside the wellhouse. Any links to what I need to buy/do? Thanks...backflush is clearly a concern now..

A pair of 20" cartridge filters in the 0.3 micron range should do it. The housings are up to $100, but thge replacement carts are a few bucks. Monitor the pressure drop across the filters to determine time to C/O carts.

You would only need UV if you were worried about bacteria in the water. Then ozone is better, I think.

Everyone worries that our drinking water is not as clean as we think it is. So many toxins may be present which can injure our health.

We are mainly made of water and if we drink toxins in our drinking water we store them in our body. It's obviously very necessary to make sure our drinking water is free from toxins.

From all this its pretty obvious why many families are fitting filtration systems to their homes. Unfortunately in their rush to fit a system they dont look into the type they really need to fit, to ensure pure natural water and they often end up with an inferior product.

Let's have a look at the ones to avoid: Reverse Osmosis Systems - these are a real no no - they were never designed to be used for drinking water but were first used in the paper industry which needs de-mineralized water. they are also twice as expensive as other systems, they strip out some vital minerals such as potassium and calcium (these minerals are essential for good health)...

      Herbicide in Illinois Water

PEORIA, IL — An attorney representing water districts throughout Illinois has filed a class action lawsuit in the Third Judicial Circuit of Illinois against the manufacturers of the herbicide atrazine, the Journal Star reported August 22.

According to the Web site for plaintiffs’ attorney Stephen Tillery, the lawsuit contends atrazine in drinking water is unsafe at any level, even at levels well below the US Environmental Protection Agency requirement.

The suit has been filed on behalf of the rural Holiday Shores Sanitary District near Edwardsville and other water districts throughout the Illinois. It names atrazine manufacturer Syngenta Crop Protection Inc., with headquarters in Switzerland, and Growmark Inc., with principal offices in Bloomington, as defendants. The lawsuit asks Syngenta to compensate water districts for the cost they incur in removing atrazine, a cost that could run over $1 billion nationwide on an annual basis, the Star Journal reported.
